FINLAND is where winter truly shines, whether you’re hoping to immerse yourself in Sami culture, bask in the eerie brilliance of the Northern Lights, or just seek a white Christmas in the birthplace of Santa Claus. The European arctic is home to one of the most romantic winter destinations on the planet. If you and your special someone want to see the northern lights, Finnish Lapland is the place to go. Snuggle in a glass igloo at Hotel Kakslauttanen while colors dance across the sky overhead, ensuring one of the most fascinating experiences in the world.

The Arctic Snow Hotel & Glass Igloos, located on the banks of Lehtojärvi Lake outside of Rovaniemi, sets the tone for an unforgettable subzero trip. A magnificent snow sauna, an awe-inspiring ice restaurant and bar, and a myriad of exciting arctic activities round out the experience.

These trendy Glass Igloos, which are part of Santa’s Hotel Aurora in the lovely village resort of Luosto, offer visitors a one-of-a-kind sleeping experience.  • CANADA

Quebec, Canada, is without a doubt one of the most romantic places on the planet. Quebec City gets our selection for the most charming place in this French Canadian province; its Historic District is so historic that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander down cobblestone streets past snow-covered centuries-old buildings, stores, and bistros. Check into the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac for a luxurious extravagance (or simply enjoy its views of the Saint Lawrence River over wine and cheese at 1608).

Montreal is a second Quebecois city that is ideal for winter romance. Relax with a spa day at Bota Bota, a repurposed ferryboat that floats atop the river. If your vision of a winter wonderland is more rural than urban, Banff National Park is the place to go. Try your toes at a triple Salchow atop Lake Louise, or buckle in for unmatched airborne views on a heli-snowshoe tour. Relax with a couple’s massage or a bath in Banff Hot Springs after a day of adventure – an experience that is unquestionably romantic no matter where you are in the globe.

It’s difficult to imagine a more magnificent location than the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Despite the low winter temperatures in the mid-50s, the picturesque seashore in Italy’s Campania region is surrounded by winding roads and towering cliffs, offering the perfect backdrop for romance. Positano, noted for its vividly colored architecture, is a must-see destination in the region. If you’re seeking for a more budget-friendly option, consider staying in Amalfi or Praiano.

During the winter, the magnificent city of Venice is a wonderful destination to visit. During the winter, the sights and sites are calmer, and the air is cleaner than during the summer when pollution and people can distract from the scenery. Venice has something for everyone, from gondola rides to stunning baroque architecture and delectable food and wine. At the very least, sit back with a coffee in St Mark’s Square and watch the world go by in Italian style.

Turin, the northern city that serves as a gateway to the Alps, should be your first stop. Many skiers visit the city before heading to the slopes for their ski excursion. Turin, on the other hand, is a paradise unto itself. The annual Luci d’Artista, an event that celebrates art via light, is a major feature, with the city illuminated up in a variety of unique and creative ways. If you enjoy food, Turin is the place to visit because it is home to the original ‘Early’ store, which features the best Italian produce.
